Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I have to know anything about emotions or empathy to take this course?
A: Empathy and Self-Care is designed for everyone. If you are at the beginning of exploring your emotions and empathy, this course provides a good foundation. If you have already been exploring your emotions and empathy, have read some of Karla McLaren’s books, or taken other Empathy Academy courses, this will deepen your understanding and skills, and your ability to apply them to your life and world. We begin by looking at what self-care and empathy are, and are not. We then move into how your empathy works with your emotions and in your relationships to inform the best self-care and world-tending choices for you.
Q: I am an Empath. Will I learn about specific self-care for sensitive people?
A: Yes! We consider empathy to be an innate trait and a skill we all have. We are all empaths in varying degrees and ways. This course will give you tools and practices to strengthen and ground your expression of empathy in ways that nourish and expand your ability to be present to your world.
Q: If I sign up, what happens next?
A: You will receive an email from the instructor Sandi Davis to welcome you soon after you register. This email will include some course information and logistics. Sandi will also send you an invitation to become friends inside Empathy Academy if you would like. You will receive another email shortly before the course begins with information about the first week’s materials and how to post in the Forum.
Q: Do I need anything special for this course?
A: Beyond internet access as explained above, all you need is you and your willingness to explore how your empathy, emotions, and self-care can nourish and strengthen your experience of living. Optional, but in no way required, Karla McLarens’s Language of Emotions cards are nice to have. Not having them will not effect your learning in the course, but they are a good support.
Q: How long do I have access to the course materials?
A: You will have access to the course for 4 weeks after it ends, including the class recordings and Forum conversations (although the instructor will stop monitoring the Forum at the completion of the course). Because meeting recordings and Forum conversations include personal life details, they are not accessible after this time, out of respect for the privacy of the students.
